Mike Flanagan
The Haunting of Hill House
WHY WE PICKED ITOn the surface, this is a haunted-house story, but the family and the grief they’re dealing with are what make it so good. Jen and I loved it so much that we watch it every year, and we enjoy it every single time.

Mike Flanagan
Ouija: Origin of Evil
WHY WE PICKED ITA mother and her daughters add a Ouija board to their fake séance business, only to discover that something is actually answering. They’re still grieving a death in the family, so you understand why they want to believe it’s someone they’ve lost, even as things start going wrong.
Availability may vary by country.
Robert Eggers
Nosferatu
WHY WE PICKED ITIf you like your horror dark, eerie, and a little dramatic, this is worth watching. There’s something super strange about Count Orlok, and the film makes you feel his presence even when he isn’t on screen.
Leaving HBO Max soon. Availability may vary by country.
Robert Eggers
The Witch
WHY WE PICKED ITA family moves away from their community, convinced they’re doing the right thing, but things slowly begin to fall apart. It takes its time, and watching them grow suspicious of one another is just as unsettling as whatever might be out in the woods.

Get Out
WHY WE PICKED ITMeeting your partner’s family is awkward enough, but something about this visit feels wrong from the beginning. The little comments and uncomfortable interactions keep adding up, and by the time you understand what’s happening, it’s worse than you expected.

Us
WHY WE PICKED ITA family holiday turns into a nightmare when people who look exactly like them show up outside their home. It’s a creepy idea on its own, but the performances and the strange little details give you plenty to think about afterwards.

Fede Álvarez
Alien: Romulus
WHY WE PICKED ITA group of young people board an abandoned space station hoping to find a way to a better life. You can probably guess how badly that goes, but the tight spaces and the creatures hunting them make it a tense watch even when you know what’s coming.
Availability may vary by country.
Fede Álvarez
Don’t Breathe
WHY WE PICKED ITThree people break into a blind man’s house thinking it’ll be an easy robbery, which turns out to be a terrible assumption. Once they’re inside, every little sound feels like it could get them caught, and the situation keeps getting worse.

Pearl
WHY WE PICKED ITPearl wants to be a star, but she’s stuck on her family’s farm with very little chance of leaving. Watching her frustration turn into something much more disturbing is what makes this so good, and Mia Goth gives you a lot to be uncomfortable about.
Availability may vary by country.

X
WHY WE PICKED ITA film crew rents a farmhouse to shoot an adult movie, and their elderly hosts aren’t exactly happy about what’s going on. It has the bloody chaos you’d expect from a slasher, but the people involved make it more interesting than just waiting to see who gets killed next.

MaXXXine
WHY WE PICKED ITAfter everything that happened in X, Maxine is still determined to make it in Hollywood. This follows her into the ’80s, where a big career opportunity comes along just as her past starts catching up with her.
