Talk to Me
Directed by the Philippou brothers, Talk to Me follows a group of teenagers who discover they can communicate with the dead using a mysterious embalmed hand. And because teenagers apparently have zero sense of self-preservation, it quickly becomes the thing to do whenever they’re together.
A possession story that starts as a party trick and gets disturbingly ugly. It keeps you dreading the next bad decision, which is exactly why it belongs here.
The Conjuring
When the Perron family moves into a secluded farmhouse, disturbing events convince them something is in the house. They turn to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who find themselves facing a powerful presence.
This terrified me as a child, and it still holds up on a rewatch. The Perron family’s fear feels real, and the scares feel like they belong in the story.

Sinister
True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves his family into a house linked to an unsolved murder, hoping it will inspire his next book. In the attic, he finds disturbing home movies that suggest a far wider and more dangerous mystery.
The grainy home movies and unsettling sound still get under my skin, even after a recent rewatch. More than a decade later, this is still one of the scariest films I’ve seen.
The Strangers
After a difficult evening, Kristen and James retreat to a secluded vacation home. A late-night knock at the door becomes a terrifying ordeal when three masked strangers begin stalking them.
Living in Trinidad, the thought of strangers getting into a place where you’re meant to feel safe already feels uncomfortably real. What makes this worse is that the intruders have no demands—there’s nothing the couple can offer to make them leave.

Hereditary
After the death of their grandmother, the Graham family begins uncovering unsettling secrets about their ancestry. As grief strains the household, they find themselves caught in something far darker than they understand.
Toni Collette makes this family’s grief and anger feel painfully real long before the supernatural horror takes over. The family drama scared me just as much as everything else.
