A note from us

Trinidadian men like myself, or maybe men in general, don't always want to admit we're in touch with our emotions, and that's fine. But after watching the movies on this list, I don't think it's possible not to feel something. Unless, of course, your heart is black and cold as ice.

I'm willing to bet anything on it. Actually, scratch that. I'm broke, so let's not get into gambling. 😭 But I'm pretty sure at least one of these movies will get you in your feelings. Whether you're a man, woman, or just someone who swears movies don't make them cry, check out the list and let me know which one got you.

PICK 01

Look Back

2024  •  58 MIN  •  ANIMATION / DRAMA

Fujino and Kyomoto are two young students brought together by a shared passion for drawing manga. What begins with competition grows into a creative friendship that follows the pair as they develop their craft and navigate the experiences that shape their lives.

WHY WE PICKED IT

A short film about creativity, friendship and loss that hit me much harder than I expected. If you think animation can’t make you cry, give this one an hour.

PICK 02

The Iron Claw

2023  •  132 MIN  •  SPORTS / DRAMA

The Von Erich brothers grow up under the enormous expectations of their father, wrestling promoter and former wrestler Fritz Von Erich. As they pursue success in the fiercely competitive world of professional wrestling, the brothers navigate family pressure, ambition, tragedy and a bond that is repeatedly tested by forces beyond the ring.

WHY WE PICKED IT

I went in knowing nothing about wrestling and came out devastated by this family’s story. The brotherhood, pressure and loss are what stayed with me.

PICK 03

Coco

2017  •  106 MIN  •  ANIMATION / FANTASY

Miguel dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. After unexpectedly finding himself in the Land of the Dead, he sets out on a journey through his family’s past that forces him to reconsider everything he thought he knew about the people who came before him.

WHY WE PICKED IT

I was years late to Coco, watching it with people who were still crying despite knowing what was coming. A beautiful reminder of how we keep the people we love alive through memories and stories.

PICK 04

Room

2015  •  118 MIN  •  DRAMA / THRILLER

After years of captivity, a mother and her young son finally gain their freedom, forcing five-year-old Jack to experience the outside world for the very first time while both begin the difficult process of adjusting to a life beyond the room.

WHY WE PICKED IT

The bond between a mother and her son makes this a difficult film to forget. What stayed with me is how honestly it shows that getting out doesn’t mean everything is suddenly okay.

PICK 05

Manchester by the Sea

2016  •  137 MIN  •  DRAMA

After the death of his older brother, Lee Chandler returns to his hometown and discovers that he has been named guardian of his teenage nephew. Forced to remain in a place filled with painful memories, Lee must confront a past he has spent years trying to leave behind.

WHY WE PICKED IT

Casey Affleck says so much without saying much at all. This one stayed with me because it understands that grief doesn’t always come with closure or a neat way forward.
