Hirayasumi Anime Adaptation Is Officially Coming in January 2027.
Hirayasumi is bringing its story of everyday life, unlikely friendships and finding happiness at your own pace to television in January 2027. Based on Keigo Shinzo’s manga, the anime will air on NHK General TV in Japan. A new teaser has also introduced the voices behind its central characters, giving fans another look at the adaptation ahead of its premiere.
At the centre of the story is Hiroto Ikuta, a 29-year-old whose life does not follow the path people might expect of someone approaching thirty. He has no permanent job, no romantic relationship and no carefully mapped-out future, yet he is comfortable with the way he lives. That outlook can be difficult for the people around him to understand, especially when they are dealing with their own anxieties, expectations and uncertainty.
His circumstances change when he inherits a modest house from an elderly woman he befriended. The home becomes a gathering place for people carrying different worries, with Hiroto’s easygoing presence offering a sense of comfort. This premise places ordinary relationships at the heart of Hirayasumi, giving its characters room to navigate grief, connection and the question of what a fulfilling life actually looks like.
Joining Hiroto is his 18-year-old cousin, Natsumi Kobayashi, who moves from Yamagata to Tokyo to attend art school. Her arrival brings someone at a different stage of life into the story, with the possibilities and uncertainty of starting somewhere new. The contrast between Hiroto’s contentment and the pressures surrounding the other characters gives the series an appealing foundation: sharing a space does not mean everyone has life figured out in the same way.
The newly revealed cast includes Yuma Uchida as Hiroto, Mayu Takahashi as Natsumi, and Rikako Aikawa as Hanae Wada, the elderly neighbour affectionately known as Granny. Viewers may recognise Uchida as the voice of Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen and Ash Lynx in Banana Fish. The latest teaser provides an early opportunity to hear the trio in their roles.
Animation is being handled by Production +h., the studio behind The Orbital Children and Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction. The project is a co-production between VIZ Media and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions, also known as ShoPro, with the adaptation first announced in July 2025.
Kei Suezawa is directing the series while also overseeing its overall story structure and scripts. Naoyuki Asano, whose credits include Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and Urusei Yatsura, is responsible for character design. Mika Nishimura serves as art director, while Kaori Sawada is composing the music. Together, the team will translate Shinzo’s illustrated world into animation, where movement, performances, and sound can help establish the atmosphere of Hiroto’s everyday surroundings.
The manga already has an established readership behind it. Hirayasumi began serialisation in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits in April 2021, with VIZ launching its English-language edition in May 2024. By March 2026, VIZ reported that the series had more than 1.5 million copies in circulation worldwide. Its recognition includes a win at the 71st Shogakukan Manga Awards and third place at the 2022 Manga Taisho awards.
Some viewers will get an early look before the television debut. Japan Society in New York is hosting a preview of the first episode on October 7, with composer Kaori Sawada and producer Junichi Katsutani scheduled to attend. VIZ describes the screening as a preview version that is still receiving its finishing touches.
For everyone waiting to watch at home, January 2027 is the confirmed Japanese broadcast window. International streaming details remain unannounced, so viewers outside Japan will have to wait for confirmation of where the series will be available.
