The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All Releases Full Trailer Ahead of January Premiere
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All has released its first full trailer, confirming a January 8, 2027 premiere in Japan. The October 8 reveal offers a new look at the adaptation of Sumiko Arai’s manga, with Crunchyroll also releasing an English-subtitled version during New York Comic Con.
The series is being animated by CloverWorks, with Mariya Ise voicing Mitsuki Koga and Akari Kito playing Aya Osawa. Nirvana’s “Breed” will serve as the opening theme, bringing one of the manga’s defining interests, Western rock music, directly into the adaptation.
The story follows Aya, a fashionable high school student who struggles to find people who share her enthusiasm for rock. At a local record shop, she becomes fascinated by a mysterious employee whose clothes, confidence and musical taste leave a strong impression. What she does not realise is that her crush is Mitsuki, the quiet girl sitting beside her at school.
That misunderstanding provides the starting point for a girls’ love story built around connection and self-expression. Their conversations about music give them a way to approach each other before either knows how to handle the feelings developing between them.
Arai’s manga grew from work shared on Twitter, with its weekly version beginning in April 2022. It subsequently moved into print in Japan in April 2023 and won the web manga category at the 2023 Next Manga Awards. Its striking use of green alongside black-and-white artwork also earned it the widely used nickname “Green Yuri.”
Its readership has since expanded internationally. Yen Press released the first English-language volume in October 2024, while the anime’s official website now reports more than 2.25 million copies sold worldwide. The adaptation arrives with an established audience already familiar with Arai’s distinctive visual style and the relationship at its centre.
The choice of “Breed” gives the anime a particularly strong connection to that musical identity. Originally released on Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind, the track combines a driving rhythm with a rough, insistent guitar riff. Its use as the opening was announced at Anime Expo in July, ahead of the latest trailer, and confirmed by Universal Music Japan.
For this adaptation, the opportunity is to make audible something readers have previously experienced through illustrations, song references and the characters’ reactions. The significance of sharing a favourite track is central to Aya and Mitsuki’s connection. Hearing that music can give those exchanges another dimension, especially in a story where finding someone with the same taste can feel like finally being understood.
Masashi Ishihama directs the series, with Rino Yamasaki overseeing series composition and Kanna Hirayama handling character designs. Kousuke Noma and Takayuki “Kojiro” Sasaki are composing the score. The expanded cast includes Kenjiro Tsuda as Joe and Fairouz Ai as Mao.
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All begins airing on January 8, 2027, in Nippon TV’s Friday anime programming block. Crunchyroll has confirmed streaming in selected countries and territories.
