Here’s Your First Look at Coco 2, Which Hits Theatres in 2029

With D23 in full swing, the announcements are coming non-stop, and Pixar has no shortage of projects in the works. One of them is Coco 2, the long-awaited sequel to the studio’s 2017 hit. Originally announced back in March 2025 with a 2029 theatrical release window, the sequel will arrive 12 years after Miguel’s first journey to the Land of the Dead.

Outside of confirming that Coco 2 will hit theatres in November 2029, Pixar also gave fans their first look at the sequel. Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter unveiled new concept art showing Miguel several years older, now a teenager, with Dante still right by his side. But the bigger surprise came when Benjamin Bratt joined Docter on stage and confirmed that Ernesto de la Cruz will return, and apparently, he’s looking for revenge. His return will send Miguel on another life-changing journey to the Land of the Dead, although Pixar is keeping the specifics of that story under wraps for now.

There’s also some familiarity behind the scenes, with Coco director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina returning for the sequel, while Mark Nielsen will produce. We still know very little about the actual story, but bringing Ernesto back into Miguel’s life certainly raises some questions, especially after how things ended between them in the first movie. With more than three years to go before Coco 2 reaches theatres, there’s plenty of time for Pixar to reveal exactly what brings Miguel back to the Land of the Dead.
