Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas Confirmed for True Detective Season 5

Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead the fifth season of HBO’s True Detective, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. HBO confirmed their casting on October 16, naming Cage’s character Henry Logan and Banderas’ character Rai García.

Both actors will also executive produce. The announcement does not include a premiere date, so the filming schedule should not be treated as a release window.

Issa López returns as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer after overseeing the fourth season, Night Country. Daniel Zelman joins the fifth season’s credited writing and executive-producing team.

HBO has not revealed the central investigation or explained the relationship between Logan and García. Earlier reporting placed the story in New York’s Jamaica Bay area, but that setting was not confirmed in the casting announcement.

The confirmation follows Cage’s comments at New York Comic Con earlier this month, where he indicated that he would join the series. The new announcement formally establishes both leads and their character names.

Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective premiered in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Each season introduces a new central cast and investigation. López took over the anthology with Night Country, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, after Pizzolatto oversaw its first three seasons.

The fifth season continues that changing-cast format. Further casting, episode details and regional broadcast and streaming schedules remain unannounced.
